The Indio Water Authority was formed as a Joint Powers Authority in 2000 to deliver water to the City of Indio.  Its mission is to provide the City’s residents, visitors and businesses with safe and reliable water, while ensuring the long-term viability of the City’s water services for its users.  The Indio Water Authority’s service area includes approximately 38 square miles and supplied 9,494.25 million gallons of water to approximately 53,000 residents in 2007.  This equates to 26 million gallons of water per a day.   

Since the establishment of the Indio Water Authority, service connections have increased from approximately 12,100 to over 19,500, with the majority of the new growth occurring primarily north of Interstate 10.  As one of the fastest growing municipal utilities in the Coachella Valley, the Indio Water Authority is committed to maintaining a sustainable water supply for its residential and commercial customers. 

To ensure adequate conditions and system capacity to meet the growing needs of the City of Indio, the Indio Water Authority has prioritized an aggressive planning process which includes initiation of an Integrated Water Resources Development Plan.  Poised to be a leader in its cross-agency development, promotion and implementation, this Plan aims to address the City’s current and future needs paying specific attention to overdraft issues, water supply management, environmental and economic impacts, compliance with state and federal guidelines and most importantly, long-term sustainability. 

The City of Indio recognizes that no water utility and no city can achieve long-term viability alone.  At the February 11, 2008 Indio Water Authority meeting, the Commission adopted a Resolution pledging that the Indio Water Authority maintain and develop along with Coachella Valley water agencies an integrated regional water resources plan with respect to water supply and water quality.  As a leader in a regional water conservation effort and a history of responsible urban planning, the Indio Water Authority is actively involved in water resource management to protect our most vital resource.
