Thank you for visiting our website. Below are some Frequently
Asked Questions about Indio’s
financial condition and Measure S which will appear on the November 2, 2010
ballot.
Over the
past several years the declining economy and the
state's taking of local revenue has taken its toll on the City’s ability to sustain
funding of services to the community. The state has taken over $24 million from
the City, and Indio
now faces a $3.3 million budget deficit.
Indio has already made budget cuts to
address its deficit, including significantly reducing the total number of city
employees providing services to the community. Recent
cuts include:
-
City Requested Early Retirement Program – 29 employees retired, saving $3.1 million
- Outright Layoffs – 23 full-time service
providers eliminated, saving $2.6 million
- Positions Maintained as Vacant—10
positions, saving $1.3 million
- Cost Savings and Efficiencies, line by
line review of contracts—saving not less than $400,000 to date, and continuing
The City has used much of its cash. The City's reserve will be
completely depleted during fiscal year 2011-2012 if it continues to spend at
the rate needed to maintain services at their current level. The City must consider further cuts to City
services.
Measure S is one response to the City's fiscal status that will be
in the hands of its voters on November 2, 2010.
Since the City does not control and can not predict its residents'
decision on Measure S, it is impossible for the City to predict the precise nature
and impact of future cuts that may prove necessary. However, future cuts will affect the level of
City services. The City Council will continue
in its practice of discussing budget issues at upcoming meetings, and remains
committed to keeping residents informed and responding to questions from
community members.
