Solid Waste Ordinance
The following lists some highlights of the City's regulations regarding garbage collection:

  • The franchised garbage hauler must be the provider of garbage collection service. Currently, Burrtec is the franchised hauler.
  • Garbage and garbage containers shall not be left at curbside for more that 24 hours.
  • Waste Diversion Mandate
The California Integrated Waste Management Act, also known as AB 939, requires that each city and county in California reduce the amount of waste disposed to the landfill by 50% from 1990 levels by the year 2000, and to maintain the 50% level thereafter. Municipalities face penalties of up to $10,000 per day for failure to comply. That is why diversion from construction sites, commercial and industrial, multi-family residential, single-family residential is very important to the City.

Bulky Item Pickup
The City offers residential customers (which usually includes rental dwellings of up to four units), as well as apartments and condominium/townhouse complexes, unlimited opportunities each year to dispose of Bulky Items for free. Bulky items are defined as hard to dispose of items like old sofas, chairs, and refrigerators. Pick-ups are normally scheduled to coincide with the regular garbage collection day. The resident must call at least 5 days before the scheduled pick-up day. As with normal trash containers, please do not set out bulky items more than 24 hours prior to the scheduled pick-up day because items that are set out well in advance of the pick-up day have the undesired potential effects of causing a visual nuisance and encourage illegal dumping.

Four items per week may be picked up. To schedule the pick-up of Bulky Items, please call Burrtec at (760) 393-0635 or click here to download the flyer.

Note: Hazardous Waste Materials can not be disposed of in your regular curbside trash or recycling containers.  For information on disposal of hazardous materials such as oil based paint, car batteries, refrigerators, air conditioning units, televisions, computer monitors, pesticides, and similar items call (760) 391-4129 or you may dispose of hazardous materials at the Coachella/Indio Waste Transfer Station located at 87-011 Landfill Road, Coachella, CA, 92236.
