Road Improvements Receive Green Light

Soon, residents will see their Measure X dollars hard at work! Caltrans has just approved Indio to go out to bid on its estimated $11.5 million long-awaited Highway 111 Street Improvement Project from Rubidoux Street to just west of Madison Street.

This project upgrading a nearly two-mile section of Highway 111 will include:

  • Widening of Highway 111 from two “through lanes” in each direction to three “through lanes” in each direction;
  • Replacing/reconstruction of all the existing pavement with new pavement;
  • Replacing all six traffic signals with new modern traffic signals that interact;
  • Replacing nearly all 60 existing driveways with a new  ADA-compliant driveway that also makes ingress and egress to the businesses easier;
  • Drainage improvements in the area of Highway 111 and Monroe to help alleviate flooding in that area;
  • Replacing all the access ramps, along with other ADA (access) improvements, along the sidewalks.

Funding for this estimated $11.5 million project is as follows:

$1.5 million City Measure X Funds

$1.0 million City Transportation Funds

$4.14 million Coachella Valley Association of Government (CVAG) Funds

$4.68 million Federal Transportation Grant Funds

TOTAL = $217,000 SB821 Grant Funds

The project is currently out to bid, with an award by City Council scheduled in October. Major construction is scheduled to begin right after the New Year, with completion expected by Thanksgiving of 2018. All work will be suspended during April for the music festivals.

Although work will be occurring on this project for most of 2018, construction will be done in sections to minimize the construction time in front of any one particular business.

Thank you for your patience as we improve Indio’s roadways!
