On February 20, 2018, the Arbor Day Foundation announced the City of Indio as a Tree City USA for the 11th straight year! Indio is the ONLY Tree City USA in the Coachella Valley. Among 482 municipalities in California (Wiki), 172 are recognized as a Tree City USA Community (Arbor Day Foundation June 2017).
“It is an honor for me to recognize the city’s commitment to sustainability as the only Tree City USA Community in the Coachella Valley,” said Mayor Michael H. Wilson. “Our trees not only provide shade, cut cooling/heating costs, and cleanse the air, but they also increase property values and help beautify our neighborhoods.”
Arbor Day was founded nearly 150 years ago and is now observed across the nation and the world. The Arbor Day Foundation is the largest non-profit conservation and education organization dedicated to tree planting. Its Tree City USA program was founded in 1976 and cities can only achieve such status by meeting its core standards of sound urban forestry management.
The last Arbor Day celebration took place in December when the city and community partners planted trees at Dr. Carreon Park at 82200 Dr. Carreon Blvd. Another celebration is scheduled in December 2018. The exact date and park location is still yet to be determined.
