Meet Josue Birruete, IWA's Award-Winning Customer Service Technician

We recently ask Josue questions to better introduce him to colleagues and customers.

1. Describe your feelings and reaction when you were announced as the winner of the 2018 City of Indio Customer Service Award?

Surprised, anxious and proud. Knowing there were a number of nominees that also work very hard, I was ready to hear any winner at that moment. When the time came and I was announced the winner, I felt anxious being in front of so many people, but grateful that my hard work and dedication is appreciated among my colleagues, and proud to represent the Indio Water Authority.

 2. Describe yourself and your job in 25 words or less.

Self-motivated, fast paced professional who enjoys helping others and taking on new challenges, all while having fun and maintaining a positive attitude.

3. What is a work day like for you at IWA?

My work day consists of checking all my messages first, getting up to speed on anything that requires my immediate attention followed by heaps of coffee. I assist customers at the front desk and over the phone with account inquires, payments, and new services in addition to assisting field staff with work orders.

 4. What aspect of your job do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy working with the public on a daily basis. I get to interact with the citizens of Indio and get to know them on a different level. Listening to their needs and concerns helps me better understand their situations and allows me to better serve the community. Although it can be challenging at times, I find it to be one of the most rewarding aspect of the job.

5. Why did you first choose to work for IWA and why have you stayed?

I previously worked for several financial institutions as a relationship manager. I worked with members of the community on a daily basis just as I do at IWA and I learned a great deal about customer service and what it takes to be successful. I chose IWA because I wanted to bring my experience and put it to good use. IWA allows me to maintain a balance between my personal and professional life and I am very grateful to continue to serve the community.

6. Who inspires you?

My family is my biggest inspiration. My parents came to the United States at a very young age and they worked extremely hard to provide for our family. I remind myself of what they accomplished and did for us when we were young, and I strive to do the same with my family and loved ones.

7. What motivates you or what are you passionate about?

Photography and travel have always been my passion. Even though my career took me on a different route, I always had an interest in photography. I took classes in high school and ever since then I carry a Nikon D40 in the back of my car wherever I go. I love new places and new experiences and sharing them with my partner and those who surround me really motivate me to continue my journey and enjoy everything I do in life.

8. What is one professional accomplishment of which you are most proud of and why?

I would say winning the Customer Service Award at our 2018 Employee Appreciation Dinner. I am very proud of the work I do, and I am very motivated to learn as much as I can when I enter a new role. Having been recognized by my peers gives me a great feeling of accomplishment because my work is not going unnoticed and receiving this award during my first year with IWA is a reminder to never stop learning and continue to work hard in what you believe makes a difference in the workplace and in our lives.

9. What do you work towards in your free time?

During my free time I work on becoming a more active and outgoing individual. I love hiking and sightseeing, and capturing the places I visit including areas of the Coachella Valley not many people know exist. My passion for photography motivates me to learn more about the art on my free time and hopefully soon, I can continue my education to better myself in my career and as a photographer.

10. What piece of advice would you give to a new employee?

Smile and ask a lot of questions. There is so much to do and learn at IWA and the only way to appreciate what everyone does here is by understanding what they do. When the time comes and your expertise is needed, it’s always good to know that the team can count on your knowledge and ability to do the work others might need help with.
