Indio to Install Iconic Supernova Sculpture in Downtown

INDIO TO INSTALL ICONIC SUPERNOVA SCULPTURE IN DOWNTOWN
Sculpture Adds to Indio’s Reputation as a Global Destination for Art, Music and Entertainment

INDIO, CA (July 19, 2018) – The Supernova sculpture from the 2018 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival has found a new home in downtown Indio. On July 18, 2018, the Indio City Council approved an agreement with Goldenvoice, promoter and organizer of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, to install the sculpture at the southwest corner of Miles Avenue and Smurr Street. It will be visible from Indio Boulevard and the Jackson Street overpass, and is in close proximity to the Indio Visitor’s Center, Indio Performing Arts Center, and Coachella Valley Arts Center. Approximately $35,000 will be used from the city’s Public Art Fund to install and maintain the artwork.

The Supernova sculpture is an iconic piece of art work that will further activate downtown Indio and continue to promote the city as the center for art, music, food and entertainment. Efforts of staff and Indio’s Public Arts and Historic Preservation Commission helped to make this a reality.

Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt of Miami-based R&R Studios created Supernova to be displayed at the 2018 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. Goldenvoice commissions large art pieces each year for the April music festivals located at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. The city also worked with Goldenvoice several years ago to acquire the large “metal dog” sculpture now displayed at Hjorth Park on 81253 Avenue 48. Since Supernova was originally intended to be a temporary art installation, additional work will be done on the piece to strengthen and protect it from the weather so it can last up to 10 years or more. The sculpture was prominently photographed during the festivals and posted on thousands of social media pages. It will be installed by October this year.
