INDIO, CA (August 16, 2024) – The City of Indio is pleased to announce the start of the Jackson Street Shadowalk Project, a significant streetscape improvement initiative that will enhance Jackson Street from Kenner Avenue to Avenue 45, adding 11,000 square feet of shade structures. Work will commence on August 19, 2024, and is scheduled to be completed in early December 2024.

The Jackson Street Shadowalk Project is designed to enhance and beautify public spaces, reduce waste and debris, and improve areas for walking and recreation. A standout feature of this project will be the installation of shade structures that will add 11,000 square feet of shade along Jackson Street. The structures will showcase artistic designs created by local teens. These designs, digitized and converted to pinhole dots, will cast decorative patterns onto the sidewalks, enhancing the visual appeal of the area and adding a unique, community-driven touch.

The Jackson Street Shadowalk Project, with a total investment of $5,365,086, is funded through Caltrans’ Clean California Local Grant Program, which has contributed $4,506,599 in grant funds, with the remaining balance covered by Local Measure A funds. The project will involve comprehensive repairs and replacements of concrete sidewalks, driveways, curbs, and corner ramps. This crucial work is expected to take approximately seven weeks, running from August 19 to October 4, 2024, with construction occurring Monday through Friday, from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm. During this period, residents and businesses should expect lane closures and potential traffic delays. Following the concrete work, the installation of innovative shade structures will take place from October through December.
