INDIO, CA (September 2, 2025) The City of Indio has been awarded the coveted Prohousing Designation by the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), recognizing the city’s commitment to accelerating housing production and promoting equitable communities.

Prohousing jurisdictions are eligible to apply for the Prohousing Incentive Program (PIP), which provides additional funding and resources to accelerate affordable housing production and preservation. Cities with the designation receive priority processing and funding advantages when applying for several state programs, including Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities (AHSC), Infill Infrastructure Grant (IIG), Transformative Climate Communities (TCC), and many others.

“This recognition is a testament to Indio’s commitment in tackling the housing challenges and we are devoted to ensuring that Indio remains a place where families, our workforce, and future generations can thrive,” said Mayor Glenn Miller. “With this designation, Indio can pursue greater opportunities to bring resources, funding, and partnerships into our community.”

Indio is proud to be the first city in the Coachella Valley and only the third in Riverside County to receive this designation. The City of Indio will continue to advance policies and initiatives that support housing affordability, sustainability, and livability for all residents. This recognition follows another recent achievement with Indio ranking among the Top 25 Most Livable Small Cities in the Nation, highlighting the city’s ongoing efforts to prioritize the needs of its community.

Established through the 2019-2020 Budget Act, the Prohousing Designation Program (PDP) acknowledges jurisdictions that go above and beyond state housing laws to remove barriers and encourage new housing development.
