Indio's participation rate in the 2020 U.S. Census hovers below 50 percent, making it the lowest in the Coachella Valley. Participating is crucial to obtaining federal funding for projects and services within the city for the next 10 years.

"We believe projects like these are marvelous to help Habitat keep on our mission, while also helping residents of the City of Indio," said Thornton. "Many people do not realize that in addition to building houses, Habitat helps restore existing homes."

From urban greening to transportation, community to housing, the City of Indio continues to look for ways to engage residents in the process of spurring economic and environmental transformation. The public is invited to participate in a series of meetings next week to shape their neighborhoods.
