A Letter from the City Manager.

I always enjoy March in Indio, there is a certain buzz about town. Our music festival season is in full swing this time of year. We got the month started with another successful Rhythm Wine & Brews Experience at Empire Polo Club. During the festival, “Indio Culture” was trending nationally on Snap Chat! That is how big Indio’s music reputation has grown over the last decade – an amazing accomplishment.

March will also mark the return of another celebration that honors how we got here – The Heritage Festival at the Coachella Valley History Museum on Saturday, March 18, 2017. The desert has such a rich heritage – it’s past is a diverse tapestry of culture the Heritage Festival helps bring to life. Stop by this free event and take some time to chat with the old town blacksmith practicing his craft, or speak with one of the many historians representing the unique cultures that contributed to our community’s growth. There are also two new free events at the Indio Performing Arts Center this month, Desert Boheme and Women Rising. Desert Boheme is a celebration of fashion, art and music hosted by Coachella Magazine, and is scheduled from Friday, March 17 through Sunday March 19, 2017. The Women Rising event on Saturday, March 25, 2017, which is sponsored by Culturas Music & Arts, is a celebration of women who are leaders in business, government, art and the community. Please check our new website for a calendar of other activities and events, including Indio’s first annual comic con in May.

On the economic front, the city continues to invest for the future. Our City Council and the Citizens’ Finance Advisory Commission are working very hard on your behalf to identify the priorities for the Measure X funds recently authorized through the November ballot. The city’s sales tax will increase by 1% from 7.75% to 8.75% on April 1, 2017. The City is committed to investing the additional revenue in a fiscally responsible manner and we welcome all of you to share with us priorities to consider. As part of an on-going communication plan, we will continue to keep you updated on how Measure X will be enhancing our quality of life in Indio.

With all this activity, it is the perfect month to launch our newsletter “Indio Live”. This monthly communication will serve to keep our residents informed, and we hope it will be a catalyst for a more robust community conversation. Whether it is through social media, city hall meetings, or over a cup of coffee, let’s start the conversation with our neighbors. From our history that brought us here, to the festivals that have made us world famous, Indio has a terrific story to tell. I am proud to be one of many to lend a voice to it.

With regards,

Dan Martinez
