We enter 2018 with high hopes and expectations for our community. Thanks to Measure X and other transportation funding, the City will be initiating the $10.3 million Highway 111 roadway improvement project from Rubidoux to Madison Street. The project is described in greater detail elsewhere in this newsletter. This long awaited project will greatly upgrade the appearance and operation of Highway 111. Other phases of the project will follow in the future.
At City Hall we continue to be contacted on a regular basis by parties interested in business investment in Indio. We are highly encouraged by the news that the Alexander Haagen Company is purchasing the old Indio Fashion Mall, with intention to redevelop the site for retail, restaurant, entertainment and hopefully multi-family residential uses.
Along the I-10 frontage, the City continues to work with the Palms developer to build a state-of-the-art movie theater, a Hampton Inn and other retail and restaurant uses next to Walmart. Nearby, a new 120-room Fairfield Inn & Suites is nearing completion.
Earlier this month, the new Walmart Neighborhood Market opened at Jefferson Street & Fred Waring Drive in Indio. The grand opening was grand indeed, attracting hundreds of shoppers all day. And a new El Super grocery store has signed a lease to open a new 50,000 square foot store in a portion of the former KMART on Highway 111.
We receive expressions of interest for new investment of all sorts nearly every week. Downtown, we will be welcoming the beautiful new Loma Linda Children's Clinic in the month of March, with much needed services for East Valley families. And we were proud this month to enter into the Development Agreement with the College of the Desert for their second Downtown academic center, doubling their student capacity to more than 8,000 students. COD has been a great success in our market.
Stay tuned for more good news about investments in Indio. Most of all, we are encouraged that Indio, with our excellent public schools and livable neighborhoods, continues to attract new residential interest. All of us at City Hall share the mission of sustaining Indio as a great place to live and raise a family.
I continue to ask that you send me your feedback, ideas and suggestions. I'm new here. I will benefit by hearing from you at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you and Happy New Year.
