Innovation hub set to open in Downtown Indio

Ribbon cutting to take place on Feb. 20th at Chamber office

The City of Indio will hold the Grand Opening of the Pilot Indio Innovation Hub (iHub) on Thursday, February 20, 2020, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Indio Chamber of Commerce, located at 82921 Indio Boulevard.

“Downtown Indio is the perfect location to incubate local entrepreneurs and help them realize their dreams of creating a business,” said Mayor Glenn Miller. “We are glad to be part of this forward thinking approach to growing our economy and can’t wait to see the new ventures realized through the Indio Innovation Hub.”

An Innovation Hub or “iHub” is a place that fosters innovation and new ideas through collaboration, constant communication and support, and interactions with a wide variety of industries. The goals of the Pilot Indio iHub are to support entrepreneurs and create jobs in Indio and the Eastern Coachella Valley. The City of Indio, Coachella Valley Economic Partnership (CVEP) and Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to move this exciting project forward.

“We are now open to receiving applications,” said Joe Wallace, CEO and Chief Innovation Officer of CVEP. “The long-term objective is to add College of the Desert (COD) to the partnership and open a full-blown iHub in 2022 when the second COD building in Indio opens. A connection between COD and the iHub to the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) line will provide bandwidth up to 100 Gbps, which is truly a game-changer,” Wallace explains.

CVEP’s successful management and operation of the Palm Springs iHub for the last eight years was a key factor in the partnership. CVEP has already developed a business plan for an East Valley iHub as part of a Federal Economic Development Agency grant. CVEP aims to attract six to 12 quality businesses at the Indio iHub within its first year.
