Indio residents encouraged to display their stars and stripes

To celebrate safely, use only 'safe and sane' fireworks

In the absence of most fireworks displays in the Coachella Valley this year, the City is asking people to fly their American flags over the long holiday weekend.

“We can’t fill the skies with fireworks, but we can show our love of country by filling the skies with the stars and stripes,” said Indio Mayor Glenn Miller. “And while getting together with large groups is discouraged this Independence Day weekend, we can continue to be connected to one another through this small show of unity.”

The City invites residents to take photos of their American flags and share them on social media using the hashtags #StarsandStripes and #Indio4thofJuly. Feel good stories about coming together as a community, or patriotic remembrances of previous Indio 4th of Julys are also welcome.

“Positive experiences are also emerging from this difficult time,” said Miller. “People are truly showing up for each other, and reconnecting with their families.”

In addition, the City reminds residents that safe and sane fireworks are sold in Indio only from June 28th through July 6th, and can only be used during that time. The use of any other fireworks is illegal.

“We’re concerned about the safety component of these explosives, as well as the potential for damage to people and property,” said Indio Police Chief Mike Washburn. “We are asking people to be good neighbors, and remember that the loud noises seriously disturb pets and people.”

To report illegal fireworks use or sales, please call the non-emergency Indio Police Dispatch number at (760) 391-4051.
