The City recognizes that illegal dumping of waste is a problem in the open desert area of the city. Therefore, the City has established an active program to eliminate and prosecute offenders. Under Section 55.99 of the Indio Municipal Code, any person caught illegally dumping trash will be convicted of an infraction punished by a fine and/or 6-months in jail, depending on the severity of the infraction.
The dumping of trash, hazardous waste and other materials has an environmental impact on the city. It not only contributes to infestations but is unhealthy. Dumped materials can pollute the stormdrain and run off the Whitewater Channel. To report illegal dumping call environmental programs at 760-625-1815 or the Riverside County Hotline at 1-800-506-2555.
Illegal dumping is the discard of any household trash, bulky items, yard trimmings, medical waste, dead animals or hazardous materials in a place that is NOT A PERMITTED LOCATION to dispose of these materials. It is considered to be a careless, dangerous act that jeopardizes the health and safety of people, animals and the environment. Not to mention an ugly eyesore on the landscape.
