Water conservation is critical for the long-term reliability of the water supply in Indio because of the slow rate of natural recharge. IWA relies exclusively on the Whitewater Aquifer to supply drinking water to the community. To help conserve this precious resource, IWA has incentives for its customers to replace grass with desert-friendly landscaping and/or to replace inefficient irrigation systems, toilets, and washing machines.
Turf replacement projects that have an aggregate square footage equal or greater than 2,500 sq. ft. will require additional review and subject to the water efficiency standards governed by the Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance (MWELO). In addition to the application form and related documents, you will also need to complete the applicable pages of the Landscape Documentation package, which can be found here.
