Indio Water Authority's Customers expect high quality water that is safe for drinking. Backflow devices are an important part of providing safe drinking water.
Water systems are designed to have higher pressure than a customer’s system to keep water flowing in the right direction. However, when there is a drop in water main pressure, a reverse flow – or backflow – can occur. This can be caused by incidents such as water main breaks or high demands such as fire fighting. A backflow condition can result in water contamination if hazardous cross-connections exist.

Backflow devices are commonly made of low grade metals and they are stolen for their scrap metal value. The Indio Water Authority tests backflows to make sure they are working properly. The overall responsibility for maintaining backflows is the customer’s responsibility. This means that when a backflow is stolen, the customer must pay the cost of replacing it.
A customer may purchase a backflow cage to protect their backflow from theft. The cage must meet Indio Water Authority specifications. Customers are strongly encouraged to put a cage around their backflow device but a cage cannot guarantee that the backflow will not be stolen. If you are interested in purchasing a backflow cage please call customer service at 760-391-4038.
The Indio Water Authority is currently testing plastic backflows in the water system with the aim of increasing the use of these devices in the future. Plastic backflows have very little scrap metal value.
IWA is also working closely with authorities to provide maps and serial numbers of stolen devices to help apprehend backflow thieves.
The IWA is painting the backflow devices to lower the scrap metal value and make stolen devices easier to identify.
